Continuity Editing Exercise (Mr Clarke)
1) What Scenario were you asked to work to?
In this exercise we were asked to make a clip using the "180 Degree" rule followed by the "Rule of Thirds" and Match on Action. In this clip it had to be a encounter between someone in an interview situation but we had to fit in the three type's of filmaking techniques. The 180 degree rule is a key part of film making it is essential that you have an imaginary line called the axis. The importance of the axis is, that it allows the two characters’ to connect by keeping the camera on the same side. When filming the beginning and the ending we used match on action.
Rule of thirds is a guidline that is used mainly in photography, paintings and visual-Images this technique was used because it helps create more emotion (depending what your genre is) and more entertaining.
Match on action also known as "Cutting on action" is a technique where the editor cuts from one shot into another which matches the previous shot. The good thing about this techniqe is that it allows two clips shot at different times to merge together to be come on big shot.
2) What were the key media language skills you were trying to demonsrate?
As a group we tried to make sure that we uses film editing language to make our piece of work better in order to appeal to audience's who may view our work.the Camera language use at the start was very little and very un-appeling to viewer, due to this we had to do re-shoots and more editing to make it more convential towards the task which was set.3) Who did you work with to plan and film?
i worked as a group involving two other people and we worked together to plan our short edit clip for the exercise. When plainning we used storyboards to help break down the way the clip was going to be shot or edited. When filming the clip it seemed to be easy as it followed the planing schedule well.
4) How successful was this grouping?
When it came down to grouping it was okay. As a group we communicated well together and helped eachother in different aspects of our work if needed. The only flaw which was detected in my group was the lack of organisation between eachother well communicated well but it faultered dur to this lack of organisation, due to this we made more work for are selves. Overall the grouping could of been better.5) How did you use your creativity to develop the scenario?
With the scenario that was given we used are creativity well to make a humourous twist in the serious plot. In our story we had a police interview and the whole interigation was about a kidnapped. due to the word kidnap it helps set the serious atmosphere when viewing the clip, the big twist in the plot is that the abduction was not of a human but really a Cat. This took some time to make up as we were struggling for creativity in my group.6) How use was your storyboard? What did you change and what did you stick to?
At the beginning of my clip we followed the storyboard details exactly but due to lack of convential skill/camera languge had to be changed to suit our teacher who was marking our exercise. We stuck to the beginning part of the storyboard and the middle part of the story as they both worked well together, whilst on the last 2 sheets we had to change certain things like the type of shot to provide more variety in are camera language, when we done this it helped my group more because everything flowed more.
